The Media Alliance of Zimbabwe (MAZ) has this afternoon, 22 March 2021, held an engagement meeting with the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) board chairperson Professor Ruby Magosvongwe to deliberate on the state of the media and sharing perspectives on a feasible roadmap for the sector.
Professor Magosvongwe was accompanied by Commissioner Mirriam Tose Majome and members of the Secretariat while MAZ was represented by the Vice Chairperson Loughty Dube and Programs Manager Nigel Nyamutumbu.
The engagement meeting, the first since the board was appointed in July last year discussed a wide range of issues, among them media co-regulation, professionalism, media law reform and sustainability among other issues. Professor Magosvongwe said that the meeting was part of a series of engagements with media stakeholders. She said that the Commission’s term is relatively new and they are undertaking a familiarisation exercise to assist them in understanding the needs of the media sector.
Dube, who is also the Director of the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) said that the meeting was an opportunity to share the MAZ position on key media issues. “We used the engagement platform to make submissions based on our long standing positions,” he said. “Of particular note is the ongoing media law reform process, which seeks to break from the dark past towards genuine media freedom.” He said that there is need to sustain such engagements as it is critical to collectively work towards addressing the diverse challenges gripping the media sector.
